Fire House Teach your children fire safety and make an escape plan before a fire happens to your home. It could save a life.

It is a proven fact that educating your children on fire safety can make a lifesaving difference.

There are hundreds of stories nationwide of how children who were taught fire safety were able to save themselves during fire emergencies. When children are taught a fire escape plan and fire safety, they remain calm when a fire happens because they know what to expect and what action to take.

Fire safety and prevention takes a team effort, so it is imperative that parents sit down with their children to discuss the fires of danger and to make a plan of action.

Here are a few at home fire safety tips for parents to teach their children:

  • Draw a map of your home.
  • Show all doors and windows.
  • Visit each room.
  • Find two ways out.
  • All windows and doors should open easily.
  • You should be able to use them to get outside.
  • Make sure your home has smoke alarms.
  • Push the test button to make sure each alarm is working.
  • Pick a meeting place outside. It should be in front of your home.
  • Everyone will meet at the meeting place.
  • Make sure your house or building number can be seen from the street.
  • Talk about your plan with everyone in your home.
  • Learn the emergency phone number for your fire department.
  • Practice your home fire drill.
